PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR

What is Pityriasis versicolar?

Pityriasis versicolor, also known as tinea versicolor, is a fungal skin infection characterized by changes in skin color. It often affects individuals living in hot and humid climates. This condition is not contagious and typically responds effectively to treatment, although there is a possibility of recurrence.

What is cause of Pityriasis versicolar ?

Pityriasis versicolor is caused by the fungus Malassezia, which normally lives on the skin without causing any issues. However, in certain individuals, especially those residing in hot and humid areas, it can lead to infection. This condition is most common among adolescents and young adults. Risk factors include immunosuppression, oral contraceptive therapy, and malnutrition. Importantly, it does not spread from person to person and tends to be more prevalent during summer months.

How does Pityriasis versicolar look?

Pityriasis versicolor manifests as patches with varying pigmentation: hypopigmented, hyperpigmented, or erythematous. These patches may exhibit fine scales. In individuals with lighter skin tones, the hyperpigmented type presents as light brown lesions, while in darker skin tones, they appear as dark brown or gray-black lesions. The most commonly affected areas include the upper trunk, shoulders, and arms, which are rich in oil glands. While typically asymptomatic except for the color changes, mild itching can occasionally occur.

]How to diagnose Pityriasis Versicolar?

A dermatologist typically diagnoses Pityriasis versicolor through clinical examination. To confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of skin color changes, a KOH mount test may be performed. This test is quick and straightforward. Additionally, a Woods lamp examination and dermoscopy can be conducted for further evaluation.

What is the treatment of Pityriasis versicolar?

In some cases, Pityriasis versicolor resolves on its own without needing treatment, although it can recur. Topical antifungal treatments in the form of creams or shampoos are effective for most cases. However, adults with severe or unresponsive conditions may require oral antifungal medication.

TIPS
  • Prevent excess sweat buildup in affected areas.
  • Maintain clean and dry skin.
  • Do not apply steroid creams to the lesions, as it is not an allergic reaction.
