DRY SKIN

Dry skin, also known as xeroderma, is characterized by excessively rough, dry, and scaly skin. This condition can be quite frustrating and may impact daily quality of life. It can occur as a standalone symptom or alongside other skin or systemic diseases, making it important not to overlook. Early-stage dry skin can often be managed with daily home-based skincare tips, while more advanced cases may necessitate specific treatments.

What are the causes of dry skin?

Dry skin occurs when the skin fails to produce or replenish enough sebum, a natural lubricant. Factors contributing to dry skin include:

  • Cold and dry weather conditions
  • Exposure to harsh chemicals in skincare products
  • Over-washing or excessive cleaning of the skin
  • Inadequate hydration from not drinking enough water
  • Skin disorders such as dermatitis, ichthyosis, and psoriasis
  • Medical conditions like diabetes and hypothyroidism
  • Smoking
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Certain medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, and acne may contribute to skin dryness
  • Genetic predisposition to dry skin
What are the symptoms of dry skin ?

Dry skin can manifest as a standalone issue or alongside other skin conditions, leading to:

  • A rough texture upon touch
  • Itching sensations
  • Scaling or flaking of the skin
  • Redness
  • Burning sensations
  • Itching can lead to excoriation marks and bleeding
  • Uneven skin tone
How to take care of dry skin at home?
  • Moisturizer Selection: Use a moisturizer regularly, especially at night and after bathing. Look for ingredients like petrolatum, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, colloidal oatmeal, pure aloe vera gel, shea butter, and coconut oil. Avoid moisturizers with alcohols, artificial fragrances and colors.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Choose a gentle cleanser without harsh ingredients like alcohol, artificial fragrances, colors, plastics, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, diethanolamine (DEA), monoethanolamine (MEA), or triethanolamine (TEA). Consider wearing gloves for harsh cleaning tasks.
  • Bathing Habits:Use lukewarm water instead of hot water for bathing, keep showers short, and pat dry your skin. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing to lock in moisture.
  • Use Humidifiers: Indoor humidifiers can help combat dry skin caused by ACs and heaters.
  • Hydration: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Hand Care:Avoid excessive hand washing and apply moisturizer after washing hands.
  • Face Cleansing:Use cleansing lotions instead of face wash for dry skin to avoid further drying caused by ingredients like SLS.
  • Regular Exfoliation: Exfoliate gently once or twice a week using a natural scrub made with ingredients like oatmeal. Wet your skin before exfoliating.
What are the treatment options for dry skin on face?

Here's information on medical treatments for dry skin and dermal therapies:

  • Medical Treatment: Your doctor may prescribe topical medications based on the cause and severity of your dry skin.
  • Dermal Therapies: These include clean-ups, Medi-facials, HydraFacial, and Oxygeneo facial. They deeply clean, exfoliate, rejuvenate, and hydrate the skin. Customized for individual skin types, these therapies encourage healthy, glowing, and vibrant skin. They are recommended for acne-prone, dull, dehydrated, and sun-tanned skin. Optimal results are achieved with therapy sessions every 3-4 weeks.
  • Mesotherapy:This procedure involves delivering nutrients like vitamins, enzymes, growth factors, antioxidants, or hormones directly into the skin's middle layer (Mesoderm) using needles. Mesotherapy can treat various skin conditions effectively.
  • Mesotherapy addresses the following skin concerns:

    • Hydration of the skin
    • Rejuvenation and brightening of the skin
    • Skin tightening
    • Treatment of pigmentation issues
    • Reduction of cellulite
    • Diminishing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Microdermabrasion:Microdermabrasion (MDA) or skin polishing is a non-surgical procedure that provides safe and controlled skin abrasion to address dry skin associated with flaking, blackheads, and uneven tone.
  • Here are the benefits of MDA:

    • Here are the benefits of MDA:
    • Brightens the complexion
    • Refines pores
    • Evens out skin tone
    • Improves skin texture
    • Reduces skin tanning
    • Lightens marks and spots
    • Enhances the absorption and effectiveness of skincare products
  • Chemical peels:Chemical peeling is a procedure that accelerates skin cell turnover by removing the outer layers of dead, dull, blemished, and wrinkled skin, revealing fresher and younger-looking skin underneath. This treatment can be applied to various areas such as the face, neck, chest, back, hands, arms, and legs using gels or solutions. Chemical peels cause the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel away, leading to the emergence of new skin with improved tone and texture. By increasing cell turnover, they help maintain soft and supple skin.
